SaskTel Internet Not Working — Router Fixes

Applies to: SaskTel internet, Saskatchewan

Quick answer: Power cycle your modem and router first, and check for a province-wide outage before assuming it's your equipment — SaskTel has documented history of outages, including line-cut incidents affecting whole regions at once.

1. Standard power cycle

  1. Unplug the modem and router.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Plug the modem back in first, wait a few minutes for it to fully reconnect, then power the router back on.

2. Check for a wider outage

This is genuinely worth doing before extensive local troubleshooting. SaskTel's network has had real, confirmed province-wide service disruptions before, including a documented DNS server outage affecting internet access across Saskatchewan, and separate incidents where a physical cable cut by an outside contractor knocked out service to multiple communities at once. If a wider area seems affected, checking SaskTel's status page or social media accounts saves time over resetting equipment repeatedly.

3. Isolate modem vs. router

Connect a device directly to the modem with an Ethernet cable, bypassing your router. If that works fine, the issue is specific to your router's configuration rather than your actual SaskTel connection.

4. If you're on the older rural fixed-wireless service

SaskTel discontinued its original rural fixed-wireless network some years ago, due to changes in broadband spectrum allocation and aging equipment that was no longer being manufactured. Customers on that older network were transitioned to service through Xplornet (now branded Xplore) instead. If your rural service or equipment changed at some point without you switching providers yourself, this transition is very likely why — see our Xplore troubleshooting guide if your equipment is now Xplore-branded rather than SaskTel's own.

5. One device won't connect while others work fine

  1. Restart the specific device, not just the router.
  2. Forget the WiFi network on that device and reconnect from scratch.
  3. Try Ethernet if possible, to isolate whether the issue is WiFi-specific.
Being direct about this: deep technical community discussion specifically about current SaskTel equipment was thinner to find than for some other providers covered on this site.
