Tuta Email Not Working — Login & Access Fixes

Applies to: Tuta webmail (app.tuta.com), Tuta desktop and mobile apps — formerly branded Tutanota

Tuta rebranded from Tutanota back in 2023, so if you've had the account a while, some of what you find searching for help may still say "Tutanota." Same service underneath, same login. The one thing worth understanding up front: Tuta is built around end-to-end encryption specifically, which means it works a little differently from most other providers in ways that matter for troubleshooting.

1. Sign in at the right place

1. Go to app.tuta.com directly, or open the official Tuta app.
2. Use your full address, including whichever domain you signed up with — Tuta issues addresses on several domains (@tuta.com, @tutanota.com, and a few others), so double-check which one is actually yours if you're not sure.

2. "Incorrect password" when you're sure it's right

Because of how Tuta's encryption works, your password isn't just authenticating you — it's also part of how your mailbox gets decrypted locally. This means password resets work a little differently than with most providers, and it's worth using Tuta's own official recovery process rather than assuming a normal password reset flow.

3. Two-factor authentication code not working

1. Check your authenticator app's device clock is accurate — a drifted clock breaks otherwise-valid codes.
2. If you set up a recovery code when you first enabled 2FA, this is exactly the situation it's for — use it if the regular code isn't working.

4. App won't sync or load mail

1. Check status.tuta.com for a known outage before anything else.
2. Force-close and reopen the app — on mobile in particular, this resolves most temporary sync stalls.
3. On desktop, try the web version at app.tuta.com to see if the problem is app-specific or account-wide.

5. Trying to set up Tuta in Outlook, Thunderbird, or another app
