Yahoo Mail Login Problems

I've walked enough people through Yahoo login trouble that it tends to fall into the same handful of patterns. Here's the order I'd actually check them in.

1. Confirm you're using the current password

If you've changed your password anywhere else recently, older saved logins in a mail app or browser will keep failing until you update them too — this catches more people than you'd expect.

2. Reset your password

1. Go to the Yahoo sign-in page and click Forgot password?
2. Verify your identity via your recovery phone or email.
3. Set a new password, then update it everywhere you use Yahoo Mail — phone, Outlook, wherever else.

3. "Account locked" or "unusual activity" message

Yahoo temporarily locks accounts after repeated failed attempts or anything that looks suspicious. This isn't the same as being hacked — it's just a protective measure doing its job.

1. Wait 15–30 minutes before trying again.
2. Use account recovery instead of guessing your password repeatedly, which only extends the wait.

4. Third-party apps (Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird) can't connect

If two-step verification is on, Yahoo wants an app password for most third-party clients — I can't tell you how many times this turns out to be the entire issue.

1. Sign in to Yahoo Mail on the web.
2. Go to Account Info → Account Security.
3. Under "App passwords," generate a new one for the app you're setting up.
4. Use that generated password in place of your normal Yahoo password in the app.

5. Browser-specific sign-in loops

1. Clear cookies for yahoo.com, or try a private/incognito window.
2. Disable ad blockers or privacy extensions temporarily — I've seen them interfere with Yahoo's login script specifically, even when everything else works fine.
