BellSouth Email Storage Full

Applies to: @bellsouth.net addresses (managed through AT&T Mail)

Quick answer: Check your usage under AT&T Mail settings, search for large attachments to clear the biggest space quickly, and empty Trash and Spam since deleted mail still counts until those are cleared.

A full bellsouth.net mailbox causes exactly the kind of vague, confusing failures I hear about most — mail that won't send, mail that seems to vanish, sign-in that works fine but nothing else does. And because the error rarely says "storage" outright, it's easy to spend time chasing the wrong fix entirely.

1. Check your actual usage

  1. Sign in to AT&T Mail on the web.
  2. Look for storage or quota information under Settings — the exact location has moved around over the years, so if you don't see it immediately, check under Account or General settings.
  3. If you can't find a clear number, a storage-full warning during send/receive is itself a strong signal, even without an exact percentage shown.

2. Find what's actually taking up space

It's almost never "everything" — usually a handful of large attachments account for most of it.

  1. Use AT&T Mail's search to look for messages with attachments, largest first if that sort option is available.
  2. Photos, videos, and PDFs sent or received over the years are the usual culprits.
  3. For anything you want to keep, save the attachment to your device or cloud storage before deleting the email itself.

3. Empty Trash and Spam

Deleted mail typically still counts against your quota until Trash and Spam are actually emptied — this alone can free up meaningful space if you haven't cleared them in a while.

4. Check for old newsletters and automated mail

If storage keeps creeping back up after a cleanup, look for recurring senders — newsletters, receipts, automated reports — that you don't need to keep indefinitely. Unsubscribing or setting up a filter to auto-archive them keeps this from becoming a recurring chore.

A full mailbox can block both sending and receiving, not just one. If you're troubleshooting a "won't send" or "not receiving" problem and nothing else makes sense, checking storage is worth doing early, not as a last resort.
