BellSouth Email Not Working — Login & Sync Fixes

Applies to: @bellsouth.net addresses (now hosted through AT&T Mail)

Quick answer: Your bellsouth.net address runs through AT&T Mail now — sign in at AT&T's portal (not an old BellSouth page), use a Secure Mail Key for third-party apps, and use imap.mail.att.net / smtp.mail.att.net if setting up manually.

I've written more of these than I can count at this point, and BellSouth is the one where I always start the same way: BellSouth as its own email system doesn't exist anymore. Hasn't for years. Your address still ends in @bellsouth.net, but you're actually signing into AT&T Mail — not some separate BellSouth login. Once that clicks, most of what feels confusing here stops being confusing.

One distinction worth understanding: this only applies to AT&T-branded addresses — @bellsouth.net, @att.net, and @sbcglobal.net. A plain @yahoo.com address is a completely separate thing and isn't affected by anything AT&T does with its own accounts, even though both run on the same underlying Yahoo infrastructure. If you have both kinds of addresses, that's why one might act up while the other doesn't.

1. Sign in at the right place

If you're using an old bookmarked BellSouth login page, that's very likely the whole problem right there.

  1. Go to currently.att.yahoo.com or sign in through the myAT&T app/website, using your full @bellsouth.net address as the username.
  2. Use your AT&T account password — not any older BellSouth-specific one, if those ever actually differed for you.

Two specific error messages worth recognizing if you see them: "Something's gone wrong... we may be having trouble with your connection" usually shows up right after "Keep me signed in" gets unchecked somewhere, combined with a stale browser session — clearing your browser's cache and cookies fully (not just once) tends to fix it. "It's not you, it's us" is a more general connection error — if you see that specifically on currently.att.yahoo.com, try signing in through att.com/my instead as an alternate path into the same account.

2. "We can't find that account" errors

I see this fall into one of two buckets, pretty reliably:

  1. You're typing just the username, no @bellsouth.net attached — some screens want the full address, some don't. Just try both.
  2. The mailbox was tied to an AT&T phone or internet account that got closed at some point. If it's been a very long time since you last logged in, this is worth checking directly with AT&T.

3. Mail not arriving, or showing up days late

  1. Check Spam/Junk inside AT&T's own web interface first — I know it sounds obvious, but it catches more of these than you'd think.
  2. If you access this account through a third-party app, double-check the IMAP/SMTP settings are AT&T's current ones. Old saved settings — especially anything that still says "bellsouth.net" as the actual server name — will fail quietly rather than showing a clear error.
  3. Double-check the recipient's address if a message won't go out at all. AT&T's system shows this as either "Failed Delivery" or "Problem Found - Message Not Sent" — both usually mean a bad address rather than an account problem.

4. Third-party app won't connect

AT&T often wants a Secure Mail Key instead of your normal password for third-party apps — this trips people up constantly, because nothing about the error message tells you that's what's needed.

  1. Sign in to AT&T Mail on the web.
  2. Go to Account Security and look for "Secure Mail Key" or "Manage app passwords."
  3. Generate one and use it in place of your regular password when setting up Outlook, Thunderbird, or your phone's mail app.

One specific pattern worth knowing: on Android, the native Samsung Email app has been known to lock up or crash right at the password-entry screen for these accounts, and switching to the Yahoo app doesn't always help either since it hits the same underlying login. If that happens, generating and using a Secure Mail Key instead of your regular password is usually what actually fixes it, not switching apps.

5. Server settings, if you're setting things up manually

If an app is asking for server details instead of configuring itself, here's what I've got on file as AT&T's current settings for bellsouth.net addresses:

Use your full @bellsouth.net address as the username, and a Secure Mail Key as the password if the account has extra security turned on.

6. On Android specifically

  1. Update your mail app through the Play Store first. An outdated app is one of those causes nobody thinks to check, and it's surprisingly common after a provider changes something on their end.
  2. If the app crashes or freezes, clear its cache under Settings → Apps, then reopen it.
  3. Still stuck? Remove the account and re-add it from scratch with the server settings above.

7. Password reset not working

Recovery goes through AT&T's system, which relies on whatever phone number or recovery email is on file — not anything BellSouth-specific. If the recovery options on screen look unfamiliar, that's usually the actual answer: nobody updated that info after the original AT&T transition, sometimes over a decade ago now.

If you're still landing on a page that explicitly brands itself "BellSouth.net" rather than AT&T, treat that as an old, stale link. Go directly to AT&T's official sign-in page instead of clicking through from search results or an old email.
One thing I'd genuinely tell you to be careful of: searching "BellSouth support phone number" turns up a lot of unofficial content, and some of it exists specifically to catch people who are frustrated and just want help fast. Stick to contact info listed directly on att.com — never a number from a random blog, forum, or slide deck.
