AOL Mail Not Receiving Emails

Applies to: AOL Mail website, AOL Mail app, AOL Mail in third-party clients

Quick answer: Check Spam first, then look for an old filter or forwarding rule silently redirecting mail, then check your storage quota.

Trouble sending or signing in instead? See our guide on AOL Mail login and sending problems. This one's about the other half — mail that just isn't arriving.

1. Check Spam first

This alone resolves the majority of "missing email" cases I hear about. Open the Spam folder, and if you find it there, mark it "Not Spam" and add the sender to your contacts so it doesn't happen again.

2. Check filters and forwarding rules

  1. Settings → Mail filters — look for anything moving, deleting, or archiving incoming mail from certain senders or keywords.
  2. Check for an old forwarding rule sending a copy of your mail somewhere you no longer check. I've seen this happen from an old automation someone genuinely forgot they set up.

3. Check your storage

A full mailbox can silently reject new mail without a clear warning showing up anywhere obvious. Check your usage in Settings, and empty Trash and Spam too — deleted mail still counts until those get cleared.

4. Confirm the sender has the right address

Ask them to double-check the domain — @aol.com versus a typo happens more than you'd think. If they got a bounce-back, the exact wording tells you what actually went wrong: "address not found," "mailbox full," and "message rejected" each mean something different.

5. Works on the website but not in an app

Sign in to AOL Mail directly on the web to check.

If AOL Mail seems to be missing everyone's mail at once, not just yours, check for a wider outage before digging into your own settings.
