Troubleshooting Apple Mail Sign-In Errors
Something I tell everyone who writes in about Apple Mail sign-in trouble: this almost never has anything to do with Mail itself. It's your Apple ID, wearing a Mail-shaped disguise. Once you know that, the fix usually lives somewhere you weren't looking.
Password prompts across multiple apps, not just Mail
If Photos or Notes or the App Store are also nagging you, that confirms it — this is Apple ID-level. Check Settings → [your name] for a banner about your Apple ID needing attention. It's often something that sounds unrelated, like an expired card on file, that quietly blocks Mail along with everything else.
Two-factor code never arrives
- Check the trusted phone number on your Apple ID is still current — do this from a device you're already signed into.
- If you have another Apple device nearby, the code sometimes shows up there as a system notification instead of a text — easy to miss if you're not expecting it.
Mail specifically won't hold the login on one device
- Toggle Mail off and back on under Settings → [your name] → iCloud.
- If it still won't hold, remove the account and add it fresh. That clears whatever corrupted local state was causing the loop, without touching anything on Apple's end.
Custom iCloud+ domain won't authenticate
Check Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Custom Email Domain. If it says anything other than "Active," something likely changed in your DNS records at whatever registrar manages the domain — this one's rarely about your Apple ID at all.
