iCloud Mail Not Working or Not Syncing

Applies to: iCloud.com webmail, iCloud Mail across Apple devices, iCloud+ custom domains

Quick answer: Check iCloud.com directly to see if the problem is account-wide or just one device, confirm all your devices use the same Apple ID, and check for a pending iOS/macOS update.

In my experience, iCloud Mail problems tend to fall into one of three buckets: the website itself, sync between devices, or — if you're on iCloud+ — a custom domain that's stopped playing nice. Start wherever matches what you're actually seeing.

1. iCloud.com won't load Mail, or shows a blank inbox

  1. Check Apple's System Status page for an iCloud Mail outage before anything else.
  2. Try a private browser window — extensions, ad blockers especially, are a common cause of iCloud's web apps failing silently with no real error.
  3. Sign out of iCloud.com completely and back in.

If you specifically see "account error: icloud" or "cannot get mail — the connection to the server failed," or if setting up a new iCloud address gives you "There was a problem turning on your email, try again," the fix in both cases is the same: toggle Mail off under Settings → [your name] → iCloud, restart the device, then toggle Mail back on.

2. Mail isn't syncing between your iPhone, iPad, and Mac

  1. On each device: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → confirm Mail is toggled on.
  2. Confirm every device is signed into the same Apple ID — a device on a different one simply won't sync the same mailbox, and nothing warns you.
  3. Toggle iCloud Mail off and back on for the device that's behind, then give it a few minutes to catch up.

3. iCloud+ custom email domain not sending or receiving

If you've got a personalized @yourdomain.com address through iCloud+:

  1. Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Custom Email Domain → confirm it still shows as verified, not "Action Needed."
  2. DNS records needing re-verification usually means something changed at your registrar — re-check the MX, SPF, and DKIM records iCloud gave you during setup.

4. Repeated sign-in prompts

I'd check Settings → [your name] for a banner about your Apple ID needing attention — an expired card, a security review — even if it sounds unrelated to Mail. iCloud services all share the same account state underneath.

5. Someone says their mail to your @icloud.com address bounced

If the bounce message they got mentions "message rejected due to local policy" with a reference to Apple's postmaster page, that's not a problem with your iCloud account — it means the sender's own domain got flagged by Apple's spam filtering, often a false positive. There's nothing to fix on your end; the sender needs to follow up with Apple's postmaster process to get their domain's reputation cleared.

6. "An SSL error has occurred" in Apple Mail

  1. Mail → Preferences → Accounts → select the account → Server Settings.
  2. Deselect "Automatically manage connection settings," then confirm "Use TLS/SSL" is checked and the port matches what iCloud expects.
  3. If that produces an "Unable to connect" error instead, deselect Use TLS/SSL again — the automatic setting is usually right, and manually forcing it can occasionally cause the opposite problem.
Removing an account from a device's Mail settings doesn't delete anything — your mail always lives on Apple's servers and re-downloads the moment you sign back in.
