Hotwire Internet Not Working — Router & Connection Fixes
Hotwire primarily serves apartment, condo, and planned community buildings, and its setup often looks different from a typical home internet connection as a result.
1. Confirm whether you actually have a modem
Many Hotwire installations deliver internet directly to a wall Ethernet outlet in your unit, with no modem involved at all — the "modem" work happens at the building level, not in your unit. If you're trying to troubleshoot a modem that doesn't exist in your specific setup, that's worth ruling out first: check whether your internet comes from a wall-mounted Ethernet jack rather than a coax cable into a modem.
2. Test with a direct connection first
Plug a computer directly into the wall Ethernet outlet, bypassing your router entirely. If that gets you online, your actual Hotwire connection is working fine, and the issue is specific to your router.
3. Router won't connect to a direct Ethernet feed
- Confirm your router's WAN/Internet port (not a LAN port) is connected to the wall outlet.
- Try resetting the router to factory defaults if you haven't already.
- If the router still won't get a working connection despite a confirmed-working direct connection, try cloning your computer's MAC address to the router's WAN settings — this has resolved similar setup issues on direct-Ethernet connections for some users.
4. Standard reboot
- Unplug your router.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and give it a few minutes to fully reconnect.
5. Check for a building-wide or area outage
Because Hotwire often serves an entire building or community from shared infrastructure, an outage can affect many units simultaneously. Check Hotwire's status page, or ask neighbors or your building management, before assuming the issue is isolated to your unit.
