EPB Internet Not Working — Fiber & Router Fixes
EPB is Chattanooga's municipally-owned electric utility, and became well known nationally as the first provider in the US to offer 1 Gbps residential internet in 2010, later becoming the first city in the world with community-wide 10-gig service in 2015 — Chattanooga's nickname "Gig City" comes directly from this history.
1. Standard router reboot
- Unplug your router.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and give it a few minutes to fully reconnect.
2. Understanding where your connection actually comes from
EPB's original fiber build was distinctive: rather than a separate ONT box like most fiber providers use, the fiber connection was terminated at your home's smart electric meter, converted there, and run into the house to a keystone jack — meaning your internet connection point may be closer to your electric meter than you'd expect if you're used to a typical fiber setup.
3. Isolate router vs. connection
Connect a device directly to the wall jack your internet comes from, bypassing your router. If that gets you online, the issue is specific to your router rather than your actual EPB connection.
4. WiFi specifically unreliable while a wired connection is fine
- Restart just the router (or the wireless side of a combo unit) separately from any other equipment.
- Move the router to a more central, open location if it's currently enclosed or in a corner.
- Check whether the affected device needs a specific WiFi band your router might not be broadcasting clearly.
5. Check for an outage
Before extensive local troubleshooting, check EPB's status page or app, and ask neighbors if you're unsure whether the issue is isolated to your home.
