Cox Internet Not Working — Modem & Router Fixes
1. Power cycle the equipment directly, not just through the app
This trips people up more than you'd expect: the Cox Panoramic app resets your equipment over the internet — so if your internet is already down, the app's reset feature can't reach your modem to do anything.
- Unplug the modem/gateway's power directly.
- Wait a full minute.
- Plug it back in and give it several minutes to fully reconnect.
2. Check your own signal levels
Before assuming it's an outage or waiting on hold, you can check the actual line signal quality yourself:
- Standalone modem: go to
192.168.100.1in a browser while connected to it. - Panoramic gateway: go to
192.168.0.1, log in, then Connection → Cox Network.
Poor signal levels here point to a line-quality issue Cox needs to address, not something you can fix through more resets — worth mentioning this specifically if you end up contacting support, since it moves the conversation past basic troubleshooting faster.
3. A specific device won't connect while everything else works
If one device — a game console is a common example — can see the network but won't get online, check the Panoramic gateway's Advance Security setting before anything else. It can flag and block specific devices, and turning it off (or adjusting its settings for that device) resolves this more often than people expect. Also worth checking whether the device needs WPA3 support specifically enabled or disabled on the gateway, since not every device handles both consistently.
4. Rule out a DNS-specific issue
If a device shows connected to WiFi with a signal but nothing loads, and other devices are fine, this pattern often points to a DNS problem on that one device rather than the network itself. Running your device's built-in network troubleshooter, or manually flushing DNS, resolves this more often than resetting the gateway again.
5. Bringing your own modem?
Not every third-party modem behaves identically on Cox's network, even when it's on Cox's approved equipment list and properly provisioned. If a self-purchased modem keeps failing to hold a connection despite Cox confirming good signal and correct provisioning, and you've already tried the basics, switching temporarily to a Cox-rented Panoramic gateway is a reasonable way to isolate whether the issue is genuinely your equipment or something else — if the rented gateway works immediately where your own modem didn't, that confirms it's equipment-specific.
6. Outage confirmed, but the issue continues after it's resolved
If Cox confirms an outage in your area and it's since been marked resolved, but your connection is still unstable, give it a genuine power cycle after the fact rather than assuming it'll self-correct — equipment sometimes needs a manual reset to fully reconnect even after the network-side issue clears.
