altafiber Internet Not Working — Fiber & Router Fixes
If you're a longtime customer, you may still know this service as Cincinnati Bell — the company began doing business as "altafiber" in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, though it's the same underlying provider and network.
1. Standard reboot
- Turn off both your router and any modem/ONT.
- Unplug the fiber power supply if you have a separate one.
- Wait a few minutes, then restart in reverse order — fiber equipment first, then your router.
2. "Your ISP's DHCP is not functioning properly" error
This is a specific, real, documented error pattern worth knowing the actual cause of: you can access your router's own settings and devices on your local network, but can't reach the internet, and the connection may briefly work again after a reboot before dropping with the same error. If you're running a mesh WiFi system (AiMesh or similar) with multiple nodes, this has been traced to a specific node interfering with the router's ability to properly renew its WAN connection.
- Try disabling mesh/AiMesh functionality and removing any additional nodes temporarily.
- If the connection stabilizes with mesh disabled, that confirms the mesh node as the cause — worth testing one node at a time if you have several, to identify which specific one is responsible.
- A different node or router (even a basic backup unit) can serve as a temporary test to confirm the pattern before deciding on a permanent fix.
3. Isolate modem/ONT vs. router
Connect a device directly to your fiber equipment via Ethernet, bypassing your router. If that gets a working connection, the issue is specific to your router rather than your actual altafiber service.
4. Check for a wider outage
Before extensive local troubleshooting, check altafiber's status page and confirm whether the issue affects other devices in your home the same way — this helps distinguish a genuine service-wide issue from something specific to one router or device.
