Troubleshooting Gmail Login Errors

Quick answer: A "verify it's you" prompt is normal security behavior, not a red flag — approve it from a trusted device, and use a private browser window if the sign-in page itself seems stuck.

Google's sign-in system is genuinely well-built, which is exactly why it's so unsettling when it does fail — it feels like it shouldn't be possible. In my experience it almost always is possible, and the cause is narrower than it feels in the moment.

"Wrong password" when you're sure it isn't

Two things account for almost every case I've seen: the password changed somewhere else recently — another device, a password manager sync, a security checkup you clicked through without really registering it — or you're mixing up which Google account you're signing into. If you juggle a few, autofill will happily offer the wrong saved password for whatever address you're typing.

Stuck on a "verify it's you" step

This one used to worry people until I explained what it actually is: Google's 2-Step Verification doing exactly its job, flagging a sign-in from a device or location it doesn't recognize yet. It's not a red flag on your account. Approve the prompt from a device you already trust, or use a backup code if you saved any.

The verification code never shows up

  1. Check that the phone tied to your account still has service and hasn't switched numbers without you updating Google.
  2. If you use an authenticator app, check the device's clock — a drifted clock quietly breaks otherwise-correct codes.
  3. Request a fresh prompt instead of retrying an old one.

Redirect loops or a sign-in page that won't finish loading

Almost always your browser, not your account. A private window or a temporarily disabled ad blocker fixes this more often than anything I'd tell you to change on the account side.

"This account has been disabled"

Don't click through a link from search results or an email when you see this. Go to accounts.google.com yourself and follow Google's own recovery flow — this exact kind of alarming message is also what phishing pages love to fake.
