Email Not Loading? Do These 3 Things Before You Panic
Before I ever dig into a specific app's settings, I run through this same quick triage — it clears up most "my email just stopped working" moments in under two minutes, and if it doesn't, it tells me exactly which deeper guide to reach for next.
1. Check whether it's really your internet
Open any other app or site that needs a connection. Broken there too? Not an email problem at all — it's your Wi-Fi or data.
2. Check whether it's the app, or the account
Log into the same account through a browser instead of the app. Webmail working fine tells you the problem is local to that one app or device. Webmail also broken tells you it's the account or provider — not any particular app you're using.
3. Check for a provider-wide outage
A quick search for "[provider] down," or the provider's own status page (Gmail's is the Google Workspace Status Dashboard), rules it in or out fast.
Once you know which of the three it is
- Internet issue: not an email problem — check your router or connection instead.
- App-specific: head to your client's guide — Outlook, Gmail, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, or the full list.
- Account or provider-wide: if it's an outage, there's genuinely nothing to fix on your end — just wait it out. If webmail also fails and it's not an outage, that usually points to a login or security issue; see what to do if your account is hacked if anything looks unfamiliar.
